Many homeless people tend to not sleep in shelters due to how they explain them to be "filthy, violent, vermin-infested, and rife with mental illness and addictions" this is so true about many shelters on how many are not clean. This is why it is important for people the citizens to contribute together to keep these homeless people safe, clean and overall healthy from diseases that can later be spread throughout the city where one lives.
BUT WHY THE STREETS?
DOGS/PETS
A man's best friend can mean a lot when someone has a heart for pets it might be their emotional support their only best friend to lean on and we all know how loyal a fur baby can be. Which at times can be sad to leave your pet behind, if you are a dog lover cat lover or in general a pet lover you will understand how hard it is to even leave them alone when grocery shopping. Imagine these homeless people leaving their only best friend in the streets. Many shelters tend to avoid allowing pets inside the shelters due to many reasons. Homeless people tend to have dogs with them and many shelters tend not to accept any animals. Many tend to think they will never ever get the opportunity to have a warm place to sleep with their fur baby however, there's only 1 out of 10 shelters in your city that allows pets.
Homeless people do not want to get separated from their pet
Shelters do not allow pets inside due to pesticides, ticks and more
Many sleep with their dogs outside in the streets to not lose their bff.
As the weather gets colder the mayor in New York wants to contribute a whole organization into helping each homeless into a shelter however, many homeless thinks it is going to take more than an outreach to get them out of the cold this is why many just prefer to sleep in the cold due to discouragement of how many they are. Below are more reasons why homeless people get discouraged into going to a shelter
VIOLENCE
Many homeless people do not go into shelters due to how there might be violent fights, discussions in between one another that can cause so much harm into their own self. All these homeless people think about themself and are always on survival mode
ADDICTIONS
Many shelters do not allow any drugs, alcohol due to how they try to maintain a clean environment, due to how these both things can encounter violence. So many homeless avoid not going in to not lose their addictions.
NOT ENOUGH ROOM
Many shelters tend to only take a first come first serve basis every day so imagine having to fight over a room when you can have the whole sidewalk for yourself. This is one of the reasons why my community has a lot of homeless sleeping in the sidewalks of town. Shelters should have enough room for each and every one, shelters should create more buildings, incorporate bunk beds, sofas, and more so each and everyone gets the chance to sleep comfortable at least for a night. To the left is a local shelter here in my community called Good Neighbor Settlement House in Brownsville, Tx. We can see how each homeless person lines up their belongings to make line to reserve their first come first serve basis. If they don't get an opportunity they sleep, there for the night and end up trying again the next day. I believe this is very dangerous for our citizens due to how a car crash next to them can get them killed anytime. This is why we should be more involved in helping our community looking clean also keeping it safe and keeping these vulnerable people feel safe and protected in their community.
Overall, helping out in the community and allowing these homeless to feel safe in a shelter should be one of our main priorities, help them get enough food by donating any cans and more. This could encourage them to stay in shelters and seek for help.
